Summary:
The main duty of a police matron is to assist and monitor all female prisoners or detainees who are being held for any length of time in the holding facility of the Andover Police Department. The matron must be a female and is under the supervision of the shift commander. All matrons must receive a minimum of eight (8) hours training in becoming familiar with lockup, restraint, Massachusetts suicide prevention, intervention and detection law, CPR and basic first aid techniques. Matrons may also be used during field operations when the Commanding Officer feels their assistance with females may be necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Handle all detainees and property taken in accordance with established Department Policy and Procedure.

2. Under the direction of the Shift Commander, the matron will be responsible for the well being and safe keeping of all female prisoners and detainees in accordance with department policies and procedures and the Massachusetts suicide prevention law.

3. Communicate all pertinent and significant information concerning any female prisoner or detainee immediately to the Shift Commander.

4. Care for lost or abused children brought into the Department.

5. Accompany all female prisoners or detainees to court or other facilities as required by the direction of the Shift Commander.

6. When requested, work with trained investigators and councilors assigned to investigate rape or sex crimes.

7. When requested, work with trained personnel on cases of a sensitive nature involving females.

8. While on duty, maintain the Matron’s quarters in a neat and orderly manner

9. Be available for duty on occasions where exigent circumstances exist, and report forthwith when summoned by department personnel.

10. All information obtained is to be regarded as confidential in nature and should only be discussed with or disseminated to authorized police personnel as determined by the Shift Commander.
