MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN

Department of Municipal Services

Second Shift position

 

DEFINITION

Under general supervision of Working Foreman of the Mechanical Electrical division, perform diversified duties to troubleshoot, maintain and repair electrical systems and other associated machinery, equipment, and systems. Perform all other related duties for the plumbing, heating, and mechanical division of the Department of Municipal Services following established methods and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

In response to scheduled and emergency situations, check, troubleshoot and/or diagnose all electrical and lighting systems in Town including fire alarms, emergency generators, traffic lights, street lights, and ancillary equipment troubles. Determine extent of problem and make necessary repairs or alterations to damaged or inoperative equipment or apparatus.

 

Perform electrical repairs, and replace parts for, but not limited to, fire alarm system, emergency generators, intercom systems, master clock systems, HVAC systems, computerized control systems, and other similar components.

 

Work from schematics, plans, ideas, concepts, and/or instructions to repair, install, layout, build, and construct electrical line and systems, controls, alarms and such. Participate in building renovations.

 

Install new electrical equipment and apparatus, control boxes, electrical lines and systems, street lights, traffic lights, school flashing lights, fire alarm systems, digital controls, and other systems.

 

Respond to all building related emergencies when needed and take appropriate action including permanent and temporary repairs to minimize damage and/or disruptions to building operations. Available to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

 

Perform electrical preventative maintenance activities as required.

 

OTHER DUTIES

Maintain established quality and productivity standards. Follow prescribed safety precautions, established department and Town policies, procedures, rules and regulations. Detect and report improper operations, faulty equipment, defective materials and unusual conditions. Maintain work areas and equipment in a clean, orderly, operational and safe condition.

 

Maintain record of daily work performed and fill out a daily accounting of man hours and materials used to perform assigned duties.

 

Provide back-up coverage as needed.

 

Respond to emergency calls at night and on weekends and holidays as needed.

 

Perform related duties as required.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

In-depth knowledge of materials, methods and techniques of the electrical trade required, and a working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, sprinkler, and other trades highly desirable.

 

Ability to follow written and oral instructions and communicate with others in Town and School buildings.

 

Ability to understand and follow electrical codes to ensure compliance with the law.

 

Ability to read and interpret codes, drawings, prints, tables, charts and operating manuals.

 

Skill in the use of tools and materials of the trade including use of a bucket truck. Ability to identify color coded wiring, and hear tones of various motor parts to assess condition of equipment.

 

Must have Class D driver’s license.

 

Abilities to program and interface with computerized systems including but not limited to traffic signals, fire alarm, lighting energy management systems, and master clock and bell systems.

 

Must be capable of performing duties with minimal supervision.

 

Education and Experience

Duties require high school diploma in vocational program; related technical training; 5 to 7 years experience in installation, maintenance and repair of electrical and lighting systems and training; work experience with computerized systems; or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a Massachusetts Journeyman’s license as an electrician, and be able to obtain a hydraulic hoisting license. Other trade licenses highly desirable.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

May provide technical direction to other building related staff and temporary workers.

 

PHYSICAL ELEMENTS

Duties require moderate physical effort under typical utility area working conditions, including boiler rooms, crawl spaces and roofs.

 

Regular use of hands and fingers to handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools and controls used in the construction and maintenance trades.

 

Duties require moderate, continuous physical effort such as frequent lifting and carrying of supplies of varying weights up to 60 pounds, as well as pulling, pushing and handling heavier weights.

 

Ability to climb up to 50 feet; ability to lift 25 to 60 pounds.

 

Duties require frequent standing and occasional walking, climbing, sitting, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Duties also involve the regular use of ladders, lifts and scaffolding.

 

Duties may require outside work performed under varying weather conditions.

 

Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles. Toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electric shock and vibration.

 

Duties require frequent exposure to noise from various machines, compressors, generators, etc.

 

Duties require travel from job site to job site.

Shift: Late shift – 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and/or later if required based on division needs
